Get scrambled email addresses for your website

It is an unfortunate fact of Internet life that spammers now go to great lengths to search out email addresses on web sites. They tend to use computer programs called Spambots which download web pages and scan them for signs of email addresses, for example, ‘mailto:’ links and/or ‘@’ symbols. Spambots find and analyse new web sites within hours of them going live.

The Clive Publishing Email Address Scrambler (the Scrambler) addresses this problem by presenting email addresses in such a form that they can be read by a web browser, but cannot be read by Spambots. As its name suggests, the Scrambler uses encryption so that the email address cannot be obtained even by quite sophisticated scanning of the web page and Scrambler code. The Scrambler does not require the ‘@’ symbol to be present on a web page even in ASCII code form, which some Spambots are able to recognize.

The Scrambler uses Javascript to present email addresses in a viewable form in a web browser window. For the time being at least, Spambots do not seem to run Javascript code and are, therefore, unable to read a “scrambled” email address.

Not all web users, however, use browsers running Javascript so some people feel a need to provide users of such browsers with a means of contacting them. This may be done in a variety of ways, for example, using an image to display the email address. You need to be sure, however, that the method chosen does not eliminate the benefits gained from using the Scrambler. The code for non-Javascript browsers needs to be placed between <noscript> tags.

I am making the Scrambler available free of charge, subject to a few conditions of use, on the ‘Free stuff’ page. I hope that you find it useful. Please let me know.
