Don’t annoy your list

From time to time I sign up to internet marketing mailing lists that look as though they may interest me.

I use a separate email address for each one (I use email addresses in the form list089@clive-publishing.com) so that I can track any use/abuse of my email address. I thoroughly recommend this approach as there are some unscrupulous people out there.

Recently, I signed up for a mailing list that had been recommended (second hand) to me. The owner of the list seems to break all the “rules” of internet marketing. First he oversold and under-delivered his products – in fact he does not seem to actually have any of his own products – he simply pushes other peoples. He sends out multiple emails every day, many of them repeating earlier mailings. And, worst of all, when you unsubscribe you seem to get automatically re-subscribed a day or so later, so that makes him a spammer in my eyes.

This approach really annoys me so much that I could never trust this person enough to buy anything from him. Luckily, I can “blackhole” all of the emails to the address that I used to subscribe to his list.

Getting someone like me to sign up for a mailing list is difficult. Once you have done so, you must then over-deliver on your promises. You must send out only as many emails as you stated that you would. Any more than one per day is very annoying. One per week suits me best. And, emails that are simply a hard sell are a real turn off. Provide your readers with new information that thay cannot get elsewhere.

Keep your list happy and, over time, it will grow and become profitable for you.
