Resale Rights, Master Resale Rights and Private Label Rights

When you start in Internet Marketing you will probably soon come across the terms: Resale Rights, Master Resale Rights and Private Label Rights. There is much confusion over exactly what these terms mean. Let me explain.

Normally, when you buy a product such as an ebook you purchase a licence to use it. The licence is usually personal to you and cannot be transferred to another person. Sometimes you can transfer it to another person, so long as you do not retain any copies of the ebook.

Frequently, as an Internet Marketer you may be offered an extension to the usual licence, sometimes for an additional payment or as a “bonus”. Extended licences are usually in the form of “Resale Rights”, “Master Resale Rights” or “Private Label Rights”.

A licence that grants you “Resale Rights” means that you can resell the product in its original form and retain any monies that you receive by doing so.

A licence that grants you “Master Resale Rights” means that you can resell the product in its original form and retain any monies that you receive by doing so. In addition, you can also resell Resale Rights, and sometimes Master Resale Rights, to the product.

If you receive “Private Label Rights” (PLR) to a product you may make changes to the product and even brand it in your own name and then sell it as your own product. For the last couple of years this has been a very popular way of producing a “new” product, but now seems to be becoming less popular.

However, do not assume, for example, that if you receive a product with Private Label Rights you can do whatever you like with it. Read the licence that you receive to check that whatever you want to do is permitted.
