Just to prove free is possible
I have had a couple of questions about the free domains and web hosting that I wrote about some time ago. There were some doubts about whether it was really possible to do. It is. I’ve done it. Here’s how.
I had originally planned to get the domain name from freedomainsite.com, but most of the offers there are only available to US residents so that did not work for me. So I used www.co.cc instead. But first I set myself up a new gmail account to use so I can ignore any email that I might be sent as a result of the free services.
Signing up for a domain name at www.co.cc is simple: I signed up for clivesfreesite.co.cc.
Then I went to www.free-webhosts.com and used the points scoring system to choose a free web host: I chose heliohost.org. I created an account and read the instructions on how to use it. Heliohosts systems are set up to make using a .co.cc domain name very easy. All you have to do is tell heliohost the domain name that you are using and specify the heliohost name servers at the .co.cc site. Then wait about 24 hours while everything gets set up.
And after that it just works: easier than some commercial systems I have used.
Once set up, you can log into a cpanel control panel for your website, adjust any options you like and upload files.
So far I have just put a holding page at www.clivesfreesite.co.cc, but in due course I will probably use it to put up information on how to build a completely free website, add some ads and some backlinks to other sites, etc, etc.
So yes it works – all completely free!

Hi Clive,
I’m seriously tempted now to play around with a free domain and web hosting as a project. Maybe use as a photoblog, especially as I’m thinking of leaving flickr.
Be great to see follow up posts on your experience.
Best Regards
